What is circumcision? Well, circumcision is the medical procedure of cutting off the foreskin around ones sexual organ, mostly for medical, though sometimes religious reasons.
Now, the thing is, modern day Christianity sees circumcision as a legalistic act that takes one away from the Grace of God and into the binding clutches of the Law. Is that true?
Yes. If you as a believer in Christ choose to do anything, ANYTHING, of the Law as an ignorant sign of self righteousness, then yes. You will fail so bad even the Devil might take pity on you. Why?
Galatians 2:6: “For on the ground of legalistic observance of Torah commands, no one will be declared righteous.
Would you look at that? Anyone who follows that Law is unrighteous, right? No. Once again, I made the same mistake as most ignorant believers. I took one verse and that’s it. In fact I took a tiny part of a verse and used it. That’s insane! And wrong! Yet, this is done so much that Christians don’t know, nor understand, what is going on anymore!
You see, this tiny part of verse 6 says in basic terms, anyone who follows the Torah, The Law, on the basis of a Legalistic observance, is unrighteous. What does that mean? Well simple really. If you as a believer of Christ wish to serve the Law under pretence that it will make you righteous, save you, and get you a sit in Heaven, then my friend, you are very wrong.
So what? Well let’s rewrite this in a way most fundamentalist Christian believers see it as. “For on the ground of observance of Torah commands, no one will be declared righteous.”
I actually feel disgusted reading that. See the difference? This is what most people understand, yet this goes against what is said in Revelations 22. I invite you to read the whole chapter, much like I have done, yet I wish to focus on two verses in particular, for they aren’t connected too deeply with the rest of the passage to actually do that much of a difference by themselves.
Next the angel showed me the river of the water of life, sparkling like crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb. Between the main street and the river was the Tree of Life producing twelve kinds of fruit, a different kind every month; and the leaves of the tree were for healing the nations — no longer will there be any curses. The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in the city, and his servants will worship him; they will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. Night will no longer exist, so they will need neither the light of a lamp nor the light of the sun, because Adonai, God, will shine upon them. And they will reign as kings forever and ever.
Then he said to me, “These words are true and trustworthy: Adonai, God of the spirits of the prophets, sent his angel to show his servants the things that must happen soon.”
“Look! I am coming very soon. Blessed is the person who obeys the words of the prophecy written in this book!”
Then I, Yochanan, the one hearing and seeing these things, when I heard and saw them, I fell down to worship at the feet of the angel showing them to me. But he said to me, “Don’t do that! I am only a fellow-servant with you and your brothers, the prophets and the people who obey the words in this book. Worship God!”
Then he said to me, “Don’t seal up the words of the prophecy in this book, because the time of their fulfilment is near.
“Whoever keeps acting wickedly, let him go on acting wickedly;
whoever is filthy, let him go on being made filthy.
“Also, whoever is righteous, let him go on doing what is righteous;
and whoever is holy, let him go on being made holy.”
“Pay attention!” [says Yeshua,] “I am coming soon, and my rewards are with me to give to each person according to what he has done. I am the ‘A’ and the ‘Z,’ the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.”
How blessed are those who wash their robes, so that they have the right to eat from the Tree of Life and go through the gates into the city! Outside are the homosexuals, those involved with the occult and with drugs, the sexually immoral, murderers, idol-worshippers, and everyone who loves and practices falsehood. “I, Yeshua, have sent my angel to give you this testimony for the Messianic communities. I am the Root and Offspring of David, the bright Morning Star. The Spirit and the Bride say, ‘Come!’ Let anyone who hears say, ‘Come!’ And let anyone who is thirsty come — let anyone who wishes, take the water of life free of charge.”
I warn everyone hearing the words of the prophecy in this book that if anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues written in this book. And if anyone takes anything away from the words in the book of this prophecy, God will take away his share in the Tree of Life and the holy city, as described in this book.
“The one who is testifying to these things says, ‘Yes, I am coming soon!’”
Amen! Come, Lord Yeshua!
May the grace of the Lord Yeshua be with all!
The starting point of “I warn everyone hearing the words of the prophecy in this book that if anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues written in this book. And if anyone takes anything away from the words in the book of this prophecy, God will take away his share in the Tree of Life and the holy city, as described in this book.”
This. This right here shows clearly, it doesn’t matter if you are an atheist, a devil worshipper, a believer, a pastor of 10 million people, an archangel or even Jesus himself. If you take a single dot out of the Bible you will pay. If you will add a single iota to the Bible you will pay.
Returning to my previous statement of how Fundamental Believers see Galatians 2:6, they are going DIRECTLY against the word of God. Nay, they are going against the direct WORDS of God the Father Himself.
Now, what does this have anything to do with circumcision? Well, you see in the Old Testament, it fell under the Law to circumcise the Jewish children on the eighth day of their coming in to this world. So, since it falls under the Old Law, then that means it shouldn’t be done according to Fundamentalist Christianity.
Wrong. Circumcision is a choice one makes of their own accord and what they believe God wants them to do. You don’t have to be circumcised to be saved, but it doesn’t mean if you choose to be circumcised you live under the Law. Why?
First things first. If you, as a believer of Christ, reject the Torah, yet end up needing to be circumcised for medical reasons, what will you choose? To throw away the great gift of life that God gave you merely for a false belief that getting circumcised will put you under the Law? Or will you get circumcised and thank the Lord for a way out?
Circumcision is something that was in the Old Testament as part of the Covenant between God and Abraham (Avram).
In fact, today I came out of the hospital from a circumcision. Why? Because I thought upon the medical pros and decided they heavily outweigh the cons. Then, I also realised that I can do this out of obedience to God’s will.
You see, I consider this as an act of active obedience to God because I chose to get circumcised because the Lord said so.
I do not in any way exalt my circumcision, nor do I believe that by following the Law I will gain salvation. It’s merely an act of obedience and love.
Yet, the moment some people from the surrounding communities found out, they immediately jumped to conclusions.
A Pastor, who I have a close bond with, called me while I was in the hospital bed the day before the surgery and spared no time in parroting Galatians 5:2 “Mark my words - I, Sha’ul, tell you that if you undergo b’rit-milah the Messiah will be of no advantage to you at all! 3 Again, I warn you: any man who undergoes b’rit-milah is obligated to observe the entire Torah!”
Of course I was insulted and appalled that a Pastor decided to just take a verse or two out of context! For you see Paul wrote this passage to the Galatians for one single reason. Their legalistic observance of the Torah, as you will see directly after this verse. “4 You who are trying to be declared righteous by God through legalism have severed yourselves from the Messiah! You have fallen away from God’s grace! 5 For it is by the power of the Spirit, who works in us because we trust and are faithful, that we confidently expect our hope of attaining righteousness to be fulfilled.”
It clearly speaks about people who are trying to be declared righteous through legalism which will never work. And yet, for some reason, when one does an action like this out of obedience to God and out of love for God and out of the need to imitate Jesus as much as they can, then they put themselves under the Law.
Incorrect. I am under the grace and authority of Jesus Christ the Messiah, who He himself was circumcised and FULLFILLED the law. I am called to imitate him.
You don’t have to get circumcised, but you also shouldn’t find it as an act against God. Only if you have a legalistic outlook on life, then you must review your Salvation and righteousness.
